Lanolin

Part of our Ingredient Glossary โ€” educational information about raw materials we may use in our products. We don't sell raw ingredients.

Lanolin is, without a doubt, one of the most effective and bio-compatible moisturizers in the world. It is a natural wax secreted by sheep to protect their wool and skin from the elements. The lipid composition of lanolin is incredibly similar to the oils found in our own skin, which is why it is so readily accepted and effective.

Its function is twofold. First, it is a powerful emollient, meaning it softens and soothes the skin. Second, it forms a semi-occlusive barrier that is unmatched in its ability to prevent water loss, allowing the skin to rehydrate from within. This is why it is so effective at healing deep cracks and chapped skin where other ingredients fail.

It's important to talk about sourcing. Lanolin is a cruelty-free byproduct of the wool industry, extracted from the wool after the sheep has been shorn. We take quality very seriously, which is why we use an ultra-pure, medical-grade lanolin that has been purified to remove impurities and potential allergens. Our version is also BHT-free, meaning it does not contain the synthetic antioxidant BHT.

We use this heavy-duty protectant in our most intensive healing salves and balms. It provides a level of protection and repair that is simply in a class of its own. It's a true, time-tested remedy for skin that needs serious help.
