Organic Bergamot Essential Oil

Bergamot is the aristocrat of the citrus family. It doesn't have the simple sweetness of orange or the sharp tang of lemon. Instead, it has a bright, sunny top note with a beautiful, complex floral and slightly spicy undertone. It’s the scent that famously perfumes Earl Grey tea, and it brings that same feeling of sophisticated comfort to our blends.

Its primary use in our craft is for its incredible mood-lifting properties. The aroma is almost universally found to be joyful and calming at the same time, helping to ease anxiety and lift away melancholy. It’s a drop of sunshine in a bottle, perfect for a morning shower soap or a cheerful body lotion.

It is crucial to be honest about citrus oils. Our Bergamot is cold-pressed, which means it contains compounds called bergapten that can cause photosensitivity. For this reason, we only use it in wash-off products like soap or in concentrations low enough to be safe. We also sometimes use a FCF (furanocoumarin-free) version in leave-on products, which has had the photosensitizing compounds removed.

We source our organic Bergamot oil from its traditional home in Calabria, Italy. The unique coastal climate produces a fruit with an exceptionally complex and beautiful aromatic profile. It's a classic, joyful oil that we use with both creativity and care.
