Ingredient Glossary

About This Glossary

This ingredient glossary exists to educate our customers about the raw materials we work with at Em'z Blendz. Knowledge is power, and we want you to understand what goes into (and onto) your body.

Important notes:

  • This glossary is a work in progress — we're actively adding ingredients and updating information
  • Not every ingredient listed here appears in our current products (some may be from discontinued items or future formulations)
  • Some ingredients in our current products may not be listed here yet — we're working on it
  • We do not sell individual raw ingredients — these materials are professionally blended into our finished products
  • For exact ingredient lists, always check individual product labels or product pages
  • Ingredients are listed in descending order on labels (most to least)

This glossary represents our evolving palette of materials — think of it like a painter showing you their colors. Not every color goes into every painting, but understanding each one helps you appreciate the final work.

Have questions about a specific ingredient in your product? Email us and we'll break it down for you, even if it's not in the glossary yet.

Iron oxides are the oldest pigments in human history. The red ochre in prehistoric cave paintings? Iron oxide. The warm terracotta of ancient pottery? Iron oxide. The rusty reds and earthy browns in Renaissance frescoes? Iron oxide. These minerals have...
Mica
Mica is what gives shimmer its shimmer. This silicate mineral forms in layered, sheet-like crystals that reflect light in soft, diffused patterns. Unlike synthetic glitter (which is essentially tiny plastic mirrors), mica creates luminosity that looks natural. It catches light...

Not all zinc oxide is created equal. The difference between nano and non-nano isn't just a label detail; it determines whether the ingredient sits on your skin or goes into it. Non-nano zinc oxide uses particles larger than 100 nanometers....

Butylene Glycol
Butylene glycol is one of those ingredients that works behind the scenes, making everything else in your skincare routine perform better. It's a humectant, meaning it grabs moisture from the air and pulls it into your skin, but unlike its...
Behentrimonium Methosulfate
The name sounds like a chemistry experiment gone wrong, but Behentrimonium Methosulfate is actually one of the gentlest conditioning agents available. This plant-derived compound comes from rapeseed oil and represents a major improvement over the harsh quaternary ammonium compounds that...

Food-grade Emulsifier
When I first started making natural skincare, I was amazed to learn how challenging it is to get oil and water to play nicely together. That's where food-grade emulsifiers come in as the unsung heroes of natural formulation. These gentle...
